For this project, I animated an educational explainer video to be used in the curriculum of Seneca College's Graphic Design program.

/01 CHALLENGE

Explaining the complex subject of visual perception and colour clearly and concisely.

The Client, Seneca College, requested an explainer video on the topic of how human beings process colour through vision. The goal for the video is to educate the students of their Graphic Design program during the semester one Colour Theory course.

The result, How We See Colour, is an illustrative breakdown of how the human eye processes colour wavelengths. The video features bright visual graphics with a calming voiceover and background audio track so the viewer can easily focus on the information being provided, while watching the colourful animations flitter across the screen.

/02 STORYBOARD

Drawing the foundations for the animated story.

The vision for the video follows a main character questioning why colours are the way they are. When prompted, the viewer dives through the "eye of the beholder" and enters the character's mind where the rest of the video takes place.

The viewer is then taken on a journey exploring topics like: a breakdown of colour frequencies, rods and cones in the retina, how colour blindness occurs, colour changes in different lighting, and a summary of the additive colour system.

At the end of the video, the viewer is transported back out of the character's eye emphasizing the message that colour perception is completely unique to everyone.

/03 GRAPHIC ELEMENTS

Bringing the storyboard to life through illustration.

A cohesive set of charming and bright illustrations were created to highlight the video's educational tone. A vibrant colour palette and clearly legible font were both selected to aid in accessibility and viewing ease.

The organic illustration style paired with the calming voiceover creates a relaxing, yet playful, learning environment for the viewer.
